Awareness measures
Most of our level crossing safety programs are aimed at improving education and awareness. In March this year the Australian rail industry launched a new initiative: the trackSAFE Foundation. A first year activity of the Foundation is the development of an education package to be pushed for inclusion into the national curriculum. The aim is that by the time that students graduate from high school they have been exposed to level crossing safety education a number of times.
We also run Rail Safety Week each year to heighten awareness around level crossing safety and trespass in the public. The week will run 13-19 August this year and take a more hardline approach. We will also aim to include the police in the Week once again.
