2. Awareness and enforcement event at Bergkelder Level Crossing, Stellenbosch
3. Official inauguration of South Africa’s first level crossing CCTV camera at White Rd, Cape Town
4. Ilcad video
List of measures taken in the Western Cape that have improved significantly the safety at level crossings:
In the wake of the Buttskop Level Crossing Disaster of 25th August 2010, in which ten children were killed, the Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, set up a task team to try and address safety measures at level crossings. Introducing new measures in South Africa is highly mired in bureaucracy, but improvements to signage and road markings has occurred at the most dangerous crossings, while the Western Cape has been very active in driving forward a new level crossing assessment standard that should see higher levels of protection at crossings going forward, including the introduction of signalized level crossings – ie where traffic (not train) is controlled by a standard traffic light.
The Department of Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape has furthermore partnered with Metrorail to close six dangerous level crossings in the peri-urban areas, and plans are afoot to close a further two level crossings. In the first case, the six will be replaced with a bridge and an access road, and in the second, one will be closed and re-routed, while the other will be replaced by a bridge.
